Fishing at the harbour - poll results

That's that poll closed now. The result was overwhelmingly for allowing fishing to continue in the harbour area.

And a new poll starting this evening, planning conditions prevented the new Sainsbury's store from having a cafe or restaurant on the premises. A couple of folk have complained to the Gurn that they would like the chance to have a cup of tea up there. Would this affect the town centre cafes or would it attract a different sort of clientele? Your chance to have a say in the latest Gurn poll.

Before anyone starts firing volleys across the beam of those normally in the firing line for............ie the Council - as an interested observer of the whole Sainsbury's planning epic - Could I make it clear to folks who think voting yes on the Gurn poll will result in a cafe appearing at the supermarket, that the condition that stops any cafe or restaurant at the Balmakeith development was attached to the planning consent by the Reporter from the DPEA & I would imagine that getting that condition overturned may be a little more complicated than getting the local planning Officer manny to change his mind about something.

It is quite precitable though how , when presented with the chance of a supermarket, with conditions ( no cafe, traffic lights etc....) the greater mass of folks seemed pretty chuffed.

It is equally predictable though,in these modern times, that , once we have what we want, we inevitably seem to want a little more.

Let's get behind a big Sainsbury's expansion, not only a cafe but let them build a 1st floor and stock a lot more goods. It's obvious that the store is popular but too small. I reckon it needs to be the size of Asda in Elgin

Some hopeful signs extolling the virtues of Nairn High Street have been placed next to the A96 as you come into Nairn from the west. Traders hoping that some of the traffic might stop and have a look at their shops?
I'm afraid I'm guilty when going on shopping expeditions to nearby towns of going straight to the retail park and never visiting their High Streets, I wonder if this is true for other people?

As for a cafe at Sainsbury's, I would be surprised if they hadn't already started the process of planning for expansion of their store in Nairn, and also acquisition of land for further stores in the Highlands. This is the way of supermarkets

Correction, signs are to the east of Nairn!

There is a perfectly placed building for a cafe up near Sainsburys(Foxes old pub)and it already has been used as a restaurant so there shouldn't be a problem getting the go ahead, just needs Sainsburys to set it up! OR Maybe we'll get a KFC or McDonalds up there!

Great new supermarket, just a bit short on freezer stuff.

It would be great if Sainsbury's was the kick off for a new major retail park at the Balmakeith, Nairn would benefit from some major retail names and that would really keep us shopping in Nairn

If this is a wish list for Sainsbury's then may I add a dispensary to the pot. Fed up of the ones up the High street and the difficulty of getting parked
More kids toys would be good as theres no toy shop in Nairn

Why do people need a cafe when they go shopping? It's not that big a store. Let's face it, if they are that desperate for a cup of tea there are more than enough to choose from on the High Street.

On taster day in the community centre a couple of weeks ago, I was told by one of the Sainsbury people that they have left space behind a false wall to extend if the need to.

A tour of the store showed little evidence of any false walls, or indeed any great amount of storage space behind the scenes. They obviously work on the 'just in time' principle of delivery which, given the winter weather at times, may mean for some empty shelves come snow time.

They have the option of applying for a variation to the original permission which could see them build an extension on the ground set aside for the other non-food units.

I think a sensible compromise would be a larger supermarket & more car parking.

The cafe is still an interesting one though & I agree with the earlier comment that any decision on that may well have to go right back to the DPEA who put the original restriction in place.

No Fruit and Veg? Went up around 20.45 and although depleted there was plenty to ward off starvation if you are into fruit and veg alone. Apparently another frantic day up at Nairn Sainsbury's with visitors from far and wide.
Gaps on the selves in Nairn - never been seen before has it?
