Question 9: How should the next Provost of Nairn be selected or elected?

Bearing in mind recent comment on the Gurn perhaps a flashback to the hustings is in order. There was also a question from the floor of the hall specifically for Oor Graham: "Why shouldn't the person with the most votes be appointed Provost?"
There's comment on this issue in the Nairnshire Telegraph this week too.

One option, not mentioned anywhere yet, is the possibility that there may be no Provost. Could a decision be made outwith Nairn by non Nairn Councillors or officials to do away with the office of Nairn Provost?

Presumably there are standing orders specifically for the choosing of a provost and they will be have to be followed regardless of the opinions put forward?

  3. @ Honky Tonks, Time to leave Oor Graham in peace (apart from any analysis necessary of his previous statements as a councillor). He's no longer a public figure. To quote Iain Bain in last week's Nairnshire.

"Regular readers of this column will know that councillors are fair game! But we do have a healthy respect for anyone who puts themselves up for election. They may not enjoy succes, but they will aslo be subject to a great deal of scrutiny and the possibility of public rejection. They may be mad but we admire them all the same."

Iain Bain doesn't admire the Tory candidate and that party's strategy much however. See this week's Nairnshire editorial for more details.

An interesting question. The answer is not as obvious as we might think. A candidate may have many qualities. Their popularity could garner the most votes but that does not mean that they are the best choice for a post for which they were not standing for election. Should other candidates for such a post be overlooked because, despite being elected, they received fewer votes. Perhaps because they stood as an independent and did not have the benefit of a party machine.

Do provost get paid? If they do Let's not bother with one. That money can go towards helping people of the town who are really struggling. food parcels in 2012 is an unacceptable situation. Especially if councillors are feeding themselves up with free dinners.
