The rain in Nairn tonight was persistent for a while but not as heavy or as extreme as it can be. Once again the (sealed) manhole covers on the Merryton/Sewage bridge gave up the ghost as thousands of gallons of water contaminated with sewage ran onto the pavements.
A question for Scottish Water.
Has this bridge become the de facto storm drain for the greater part of Nairn's sewage system?
Tonight a heavy stink of jobbies hangs over the entire area and one of the manhole covers is a dangerous obstacle on the path. Scottish Water what are you going to do to rectify this problem?
A question for Highland Council (Environmental Health Department).
What are the risks to human health from these continuing spillages?
Scottish Water have been alerted. We would urge all gurnites to report similar incidents of pollution to Scottish Water via this webpage.
Some pictures: tomorrow hundreds of Nairnites, some with their children and pets will walk through these areas unaware of the extent of the sewage contamination.

Yet again another 25 minute cloudburst and we see a major pollution incident. The sewer system is not fit for purpose and the river has been too handy for Scottish water for too long. It's ironic that I gave the cob his first dose of antibiotics today, this evening Scottish water gave him his second dose of bacteria !
ReplyDeleteLiving next to Merryton Bridge :( I contacted Sepa this evening as you were down filming. The on- call guy from there says the more people complain to them, the more pressure they can put on Scottish Water. The number is below for anyone that sees this. I don't think people quite got that to cross the bridge, they had to walk through the raw sewage!! Scottish water guys that were here on Saturday evening are back clearing up yet again!! Even they say " Surely something nees to be one here"

The beach can never win any award with this continuing problem.
Yep, the new pipe certainly doesn't seemed to have helped the ongoing situation in this area, in fact, if anything, it has greatly exacerbated it. It's not although the rain was really heavy. Back to the drawing board, methinks.
ReplyDeleteI re-tweeted the video on Twitter and included Scottish water on the tweet. They have have replied saying the job is urgent and will be investigated asap given the level of flooding.Ref Number 4066680. It is a case of pressure being applied repeatedly.
ReplyDeleteWas the close up of the poo really needed gurn??
ReplyDeleteThe new section of pipe was put in because the old one was fractured and leaking at the base of Brochers brae. This meant that the sewage leaked out into yet another location. The problem must lie beyond the Merryton bridge causing the backup and overspill.
ReplyDeleteMaybe it was a different pipe that was replaced.....
ReplyDeletethey,ll wait till the weekend to repair it
ReplyDeletethey,ll get paid time and a turd(time and a third)
poor jayteescot and his beloved swans need more help
narook.
Logged with both Scottish Water and Sepa yet again. Fri 15.45!!! Being a relatively new person Nairn(2years) I do not enough history of this and what has been tackled in the past.
ReplyDeleteNext week (apparently) Scottish water are coming to do a colonoscopy on sewer pipes, looking for fat build ups and blockages. Sepa have all the info! They also asked please please please anyone reporting, please also report to them. They will put the pressure on.
ReplyDeleteNext time it rains, why don't we all celebrate with a turd (street) party! I'll be wearing my wellies and giving it a good splash around.
ReplyDeleteThe footway on the bridge is actually free of jobbies during these incidents it all flows from the manholes just off the bridge.
