Fair enough? Local CAB campaigns for employment rights

Is your employer fair enough? That’s the question being posed in a new campaign launched by Nairn Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB).

The drive aims to highlight bad practice and remind employees of the basic rights they have. Fair Enough? is aimed at all workers, but extra emphasis is being placed on those more vulnerable to exploitation, such as young people and recent immigrants.

Every week, Nairn CAB sees clients who have been badly treated in their workplace. Issues around pay, sickness, holidays and parental rights are commonplace, as well as problems with bullying and unfair dismissal.

Nairn CAB manager Gill MacLean said:

“With Fair Enough?, we want to expose bad employment practices and get the message across that employees should be protected at work, and that there is legislation to help them.”

“Sometimes it can be the case that an employer hasn’t had enough help with knowing its obligations, which we can also advise them on.”

“We’re reminding people of the basic rights they have. If they pop into the CAB they can pick up a ‘know your rights scratchcard’ to keep with them. It reminds them of things like minimum wage, holiday entitlements and rules on sickness absence. Anyone can come into the CAB with a problem they have at work and we’ll do our best to help them.”

The Nairn CAB will be holding a special drop in clinic for employment questions, on Thursday 26th February at our office: 6 High Street, Nairn between 5.30 and 7.30pm. Or you can phone them on 01667 456677.

If your employer recognises a trade union, join it. This is a better guarantee of ensuring that an employee is treated fairly.
