    Oh joy! Yes I know the work needs doing and sorry to be negative but this work is going at a snail's pace with seemingly nothing being done some days. I hope it does finish in February, mind you I wonder if any shops will still be open by then?

  2. Heard at the Subbies/Westies CC meetings last night that compensation forms for traders are available but they are a bit complicated apparently.

    @Death of the High Street
    I am a High Street resident. Prior to commencement of their work SGN passed out a very informative leaflet to everyone in the locality- which is also available to view online.
    The timescales of the works were clearly detailed and at present they would appear to working well ahead of schedule, not to mention that parts of the High Street do appear to have been kept open at certain hours to allow for deliveries etc.
    I work as an engineer for a living (not associated with SGN or the gas authorities in any way) and feel you are being unfair with your remarks about work not being done some days, I can only imagine the procedures they must go through working on live gas mains and the permits, method statements, risk assessments, and safety procedures that must be adhered to in order to keep everyone's gas supply on and carry out their work correctly and most importantly safely!
    How many of the affected businesses complaining use gas to heat their premises, I guess they'd also blame SGN if the existing pipe ruptured leaving them without gas for weeks......

    Anonymous...I think a lot of the frustration felt by shoppers, businesses and some residents is simply because the High Street was ripped up completely only a few years ago.

    I am also an engineer who doesn't work in the utilities sector.. but I do know that the degredation suffered by the gas pipes in the town centre is not something that mysteriously just occured in the years since the Streetscape work was undertaken..... there was a decision made by SGN , or whatever they were called then, not to co-ordinate the gas and Streetscape works .... & that was a poor decision.

    I also hope that their efficient work through the programme schedule affords them the time to ensure that the paved surfaces of the stret are returned to the same state they were in before the work commenced...but somehow I doubt it will....

    The street is definitely not being left in the state SGN found it - I noticed yesterday how ugly the repairs are, the whole high street deserves better with flaking paint on shop exteriors & empty shops, on top of the necessary but very ill-timed SGN works I too will be amazed if any shops remain after the works. I hope those in charge will be out to inspect the poor workmanship of bringing the surface back to as near as it was before the SGN work began - it is a mess. Compensation required and no shopkeeper should have to battle for it either.
