KLM Royal Dutch Airlines has announced that from May 17 they will fly daily to Inverness from the multi-award winning hub, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.
Commenting on the announcement Drew Hendry MP for Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch & Strathspey said:
“This is very good news for Inverness and the Highlands and confirms the growing appreciation that both international tourism and business has for what we have to offer here. It is another step on the way to ensure that we have sustainable and resilient links to major international hubs and I'm delighted that the ongoing work is getting results.”

..lets hope we have/get the infrastructure to take these extra flights and passengers / tourists and they do not get turned off by no rail link into town, not much car hire choice, little parking, full buses, nor any kind of city bike hire scheme from the airport to town let alone a decent cycle lane connecting it together.
No bicycle hire, jeez, doesn't seem that long ago that Inverness airport wasn't much more than a tin hut and required a phone call if you wanted a taxi the few miles into town. I just hope the infrastructure can cope with the one extra flight per day otherwise they'll have to divert to Aberdeen. Oh but wait, they too don't have bicycle hire or an onsite railway station. It's a wonder we get any tourists coming to Scotland
@south of the border "It's a wonder we get any tourists coming to Scotland"
perhaps we could get more with a little bit of forward planning and investment in infrastructure. if you build it they will come....
I think @anon 11:04am is simply stating the facilities at most modern european airports....
The headline of this post would suggest we are getting more tourists flying into Inverness without having to add to the current infrastructure
Why is it (mainly incomers in my experience) some folk demand that Nairn/Inverness/The Highlands/Scotland needs the latest gizmo to attract tourists. Many seem to like the vast emptiness that is the Highlands and enjoy it for what it is just as many of us do.
Latest figures suggest tourism to Scotland is increasing: http://www.visitscotland.org/pdf/2015%201104%20November%20Monthly%20Trends%20Snapshot_final.pdf
Ha ha. I think this is more like the growing appreciation of what Amsterdam has to offer us as tourists, fine coffee shops by the day and the sunset lights glowing throughout the city of an evening
Well said 3.28
What a negative perspective some Gurners have!
It is a good wee step forward for Highland's tourism, commercial businesses etc etc.
Flybe and KLM are already codeshare airlines, this means if you book with KLM from Inverness they include the flight from Inverness to Amsterdam at the moment by Flybe.
Just searched flights for next year for Inverness to Amsterdam and KLM depart at 11.00, whilst Flybe departs at 11.15 - so give it a few months and I would expect Flybe to suspend flights to amsterdam.
Plus it would appear KLM only fly's out and not back!
I don`t give a tosh what the SNP think about the link. More important is what the local population think. I would suggest that is positive for the area. However, where do we draw the balance from the natural beauty, wildlife and wilderness of the Highlands to fall blow tourist Highland Disney land?
You only have to go to Cornwall, Kernow in Cornish, to see how that beautiful land has become a mecca for hoards of tourists flooding down to from Birmingham and London. It`s been destroyed, locals cannot afford to live there anymore and the ethnic Cornish are being driven from their land and local communities replaced by lovies and retiries
Flights link Amsterdam will help local connect to services further a field and the other way round. But lets be careful how we treat the Highlands. Once gone, it cannot be replaced
Let`s just hope it doesn`t become a lads weekend shuttle service to the legalised sex industry of Amsterdam
I think you have got that wrong Anon 9:45pm, if a group of "Lads" do go over, I would say it would be for the other thing Amsterdam is famous for, the "Diamond Quarter"!!!!!!!!
