High Street Gritting anger

Angry comments on social media this morning about the state of the gritting or lack of it in Nairn High Street. In the real world there were echoes of the complaints in the virtual one this lunchtime as worried shoppers negotiated ice station Nairn High Street. It was eventually gritted at around 1 pm but not before one or two people had fallen over in the town centre area. Citizens could be seen walking on the road rather than risk the pavement.

Anger was expressed to this observer by two eye-witnesses who claimed that the area outside the Courthouse had been salted  before anywhere else on the High Street.

The weather has been cruel, the Council cuts are kicking in but usually the town centre gets gritted, was there a problem with some of the machinery this morning perhaps?

I walked up from Fishertown about 11:50AM & nowhere was gritted except outside the town house!

I wonder if because there was no obvious snow they thought it would be ok to not grit?

Clear/black ice everywhere on the pavements, even with a walking pole & proper boots I still had to be careful!

Saw the workmen gritting about 12:50PM ish, oh well that's cuts for you!

Waits for H.C. to retort "that if you want the pavements gritted & services then pay more in Council tax, a nice 18% rise like Moray are suggesting"

Told you so said...

The whole of the UK has seen cutbacks, what did folk expect when they voted for the Tories or indeed said No in the Scottish referendum?

And where would the snp get the extra money, if they had won the referendum? They were relying on a healthy, vibrant north sea, thank got they never won, as we would be in a even bigger black hole now!

Hmmm... I thought Scottish Parliament were in charge of finances.....maybe I missed something. We voted the SNP in and they have done
approximately nothing. I won't vote for them again.

cut backs have been made in nairn quite some time ago[years ago]without it being noticed.its all going wrong now but hc have been cutting for years,i dont know how it can be turned round, perhaps a local council with real power.

Oil would have been less than 10% of income to an independent Scotland, it's a finite resource and will increase in value

The Scottish government is in charge of some devolved finances but is dependent on Westminster in terms of what it gets

Tories will maker sure their pals get richer and Scotland isn't one of them

I left for work at 0830am and the pavements on the high street had definately been gritted

Do you mean the pavements anon? Because I guarantee you there were some very dodgy spots until the salt appeared on them at about 13.00.

You know that £25k of grants that's up for grabs, how about using that for the pavements all over the town? Was the situation this morning anything to do with cuts or was it just ineptitude?

Sorry anon @6.58 missed your comment yesterday, it is up now.

Local Council, Local Control, Local Contracting - real control rather than toothless committees. It was just mad that we in Scotland allowed the Labour Party in the 70s and the Tories in the 90s to do away with Nairn and Nairnshire. If you see anybody politically campaigning, ask them what they are going to do about it!

I bet Inverness town centre was salted early. Yet again Inverness Council is showing what it thinks of the outer areas of the council.

What is the Davidson trust used for.? It's meant for the good of the people of Nairn.
The trustees need yo be more open.
