Nairn River Community Council state on their website that during a recent online meeting between the town's two Community Councils and 3 of the town's Highland Councillors it emerged that :
Various 'business models' were described which are operating in other Highland Communities,
where Highland Council oversees collection of charges and parking
enforcement. Options include Council paying a one off annual rental to
Nairn Common Good fund or agreeing a percentage of surplus funds to be
released for local community spending."
River CC have posted additional information re this and other issues and are asking a number of questions, including the following on Parking:
lets be different and stand out from the crowd by Not having parking charges for visitors or locals? It would be a good Welcoming way to attract visitors to come and enjoy what facilities we have, bringing buisiness to our town;Be it providing good food to well stocked varied shops, Artisinal Ice Cream to Colorful fun Splashpad for the youngsters - everybody wins. We also need Open Public Toilets as a matter of urgency with hand gel dispensers installed till such times as no contact tap handwashing sinks can be installed! Thank you, p coleman.
ReplyDeleteYes we should introduce parking charges. Definitely in Maggot and Links but not Harbour. Nairn must welcome and manage Campervans and caravans as is common in France. Money collected (as per Findhorn) should remain in local community hands and ring fenced to invest in better services for these car park areas. I think the High St should be more pedestrian friendly with parking only for disabled and deliveries. Charges should be introduced in the large area opposite the co-op and public toilets re-opened, funded by the new parking charge.
ReplyDeleteI am against parking charges in The Links, The Harbour or The Maggot but if charges are voted the less Highland Council are involved the better, you can be sure as eggs are eggs, they will syphon off all the money and Nairn will be left with nothing. Surely Nairn Council are capable of running this themselves. It's not rocket science.
ReplyDeleteHow do parking charges = Tourists Welcome
ReplyDeleteCrown Estates funding received by Highland Council was debated earlier today. Nairn's share of the funds are £60k. Surely the lions share of these funds could be used to balance the parking income and allow FREE parking for Nairnites and others all year round. Any monies left over could be used to install 'disposal points' for campervans such as they have in Loch Lomond National Park. With the forecast of more offshore wind farms in the Moray Firth there will likely be even more monies to come.
ReplyDeleteWell done to the Secretary of NRCC for bringing this to the attention of the community. Too much goes on behind closed doors in the Highland Council, too many secret meetings.
ReplyDeleteWill this mean we will feel their wrath over the coming weeks and months?
I am in agreement with Unknown at 9:27AM the full intention of THC is to syphon off the money to Inverness. The people of Nairn own the Common Good, they should decide.
@ anon re press comment, will do some research
ReplyDeleteYes thank you anon for your comments but it would be better to hear this from sources that actually were present at that meeting. It could be open to interpretation. If those present wish to e-mail me then I may be more inclined to use material that can be verified. You will appreciate there is a lot of tension around these matters just now and we wish to be as accurate as possible with information received.
ReplyDelete@ G Guthrie. Understand that the incident you referred to was reported and commented upon in the local paper. Further understand that the Nairnshire could send you copies of the material at their convenience if you were to contact them.
